New text: Final repost I promise! So we are now at the magic number of prints requested, so this will definately be happening now. I will be placing the order tomorrow evening UK time and sending out the emails to everyone who has requested one with info on payment and such. So anyone else who wants to get in on this, nows the time to shoot me an email.

Old text:

A couple of weeks ago (or longer, I forget) I got some 3d prints done of the Oppo logo. There were a few interested in getting the 3d CAD files, but I wanted to see if anyone would be interested in doing a group buy? Looking into the costs, I would need to order 25 to hit the minimum order amount, so might not be do-able, but wanted to see what people think:

Kinja'd!!!

They look like this^^

Kinja'd!!!

I think for everything they will cost between $7 and $8 to ship the USA (and Canada). And if people buy more than 1, the price will only be $1.50 more for each extra bought, because shipping is the biggest expense. I can ship to Europe for between €7 or €8 also, and within England for slightly less than £5,

If people are interested drop me an email, just an expression of interest, and in a week or so (todays the 7th, so on the 14th March) I will see if I have enough people in to go ahead with the order. Ill repost this a few times this week. See if we have the numbers to do it.

My email is rwsmotorsport@gmail.com

Edit 1: They can be black or white, theres no price different, but I haven’t ever had any printed in black, so cant promise how they will look.

Haha, about £4.50 or £5 depending on how much the Royal Mail ScamRinseRapemyWallet costs.

Is this a hard or flexible plastic? Not sure a hard plastic would take up to the abuse I put my keys through usually (particularly the arrows).

Are they quite fragile or could it put up with a bit of wear and tear? Either way I’m interested I’ll drop an email later on.

I’ve had mine on my keys for a little over a month, and I’ve lost one of the arrows (got stuck in my rucksack) but the main parts pretty tough and flexible.

Its Nylon, so quite bendy, but yeah the arrows arent the toughest thing. I’ve had mine on my keys for about a month and one of the arrows came off the other day cause it got stuck in my rucksack.

What would that be? Like make a mould around it and then put some material in it to set? Thatd be pretty cool

Yeah they sell kits, it’s polyester based I believe. Would make an oblong tray and pour the resin over the oppo sign, then drill out the hole for the keyring.

Printing with nylon, eh? I’ve heard of people using weed trimmer line - baking it to dry it out, then printing with it. I can’t say I tried doing that for fear of breaking the university’s 3D printer.

Oh wow that’s brave. This isn’t my 3D printer it’s a company I have used at work before who have been pretty good. All they do is white and black nylon, nothing else.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, there’s a reason I never tried it. :P The MakerBot I used ran PLA filament. It was pretty decent to work with. I’ve got a coworker who put together a reprap of some kind, although he’s often having issues with it.

Kinja'd!!! RWS Motorsport > BaconSandwich is tasty.

I think the company that will print these use big Stratasys printers. I think they are actually SLA rather than 3D prints because if you have a cavity in the part it is full of powder, as we have discovered on some prints. still, we use the parts for actual functional components at work with pretty good success,

Kinja'd!!! BaconSandwich is tasty. > RWS Motorsport
03/08/2016 at 14:09

Kinja'd!!!0

Neat. I haven’t had a chance to play with an SLA printer.

The university I went to had an art department that would do prints using PLA, but then use a lost-wax approach and cast things into metal. It was pretty neat to see. I’ve got a few small brass objects that were originally 3D printed. It crossed my mind to print a Ford Ecoboost 3 cylinder one chunk at a time, then glue it together and get them to cast it. :P

They are getting 3d printed (SLA to be precise) by a company we use at work. The first samples I got done for free as they were contained within voids of other models, but I am seeing if there is enough interest to do meet their MOQ and place an order.

Not to steal your business but my university lets us 3d print if we pay for the filament we use. I think I could get the costs down for people in the US (I’d imagine it’s light enough that it could be sent in regular mail, and the $7 is for the shipment across the pond).

If you had a 3d model (I can read most formats) that’d be great, I could do some test runs. If you don’t have one it’s easy enough to make.

Kinja'd!!! RWS Motorsport > Slant6
03/13/2016 at 14:18

Kinja'd!!!0

I can send across the CAD happily. I have priced it so it literally just covers my cost, so the $7 is the price for 1 print and the postage. But yeah I would imagine that postage from within the US might be cheaper, of which about $5ish is the postage.

As it stands though about half the people who’ve asked are european based which makes it slightly tougher to try and keep the QTYs reasonable cause of the order. Send me an email though and we can discuss, cause if its cheaper for you to print them and send them to Europe, and we don’t have an MOQ that might work out pretty well.

Oh. Shapeways lets you upload the model file and open sales to the public. I’m currently working on a Jalopnik keychain to put up on my store. They take care of shipping and everything and pricing (in plastic at least) is pretty reasonable.

Ive had mine for about a month now and I have lost the arrow at the far end, because it got caught in the fabric of my backpack. But because its quite bendy they are stronger than I first thought. I got them printed initally thinking they might last a week or so, but have been pretty good so far.

The white does mark though, so might be worth getting black as it wont show up the marks so bad.
